Tawang

This tourist destination is famous for its 400-year old monastery. Numerous followers of Buddhism visit the pilgrim centre every year. It is not only about its religious and cultural importance; the natural beauty of Tawang also attracts numerous tourists every year. Though you can reach the place from Guwahati by road, they are not in good condition and can make your journey hectic.

The Necessary Permit

Indian tourists entering Arunachal Pradesh need the Inner Line Permit (ILP). You can obtain one from the Deputy Residence Commissioner Offices of Guwahati, Kolkata or Tezpur or let our travel agents do it on your behalf. Just provide us with two passport-size photos and two photocopies of your identity proof.

Foreign tourists visiting Tawang have to obtain the Protected Area Permit (PAP) when travelling in a group of 2 or more. The permit is generally valid for a month. We can help you obtain the permit as foreign tourists have to apply for the permit through approved tour operators. They also have to pay USD 50 per head as Royalty to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

2 Famous Tourist Spots Near Tawang

  • Jaswant Garh: Jaswant Garh is famous for the Indian Army War Memorial, praising the bravery of the soldiers who have fought the 1962 war against the Chinese army. Jaswant Singh Rawat fought the Army invading Tawang and was awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
  • Bum La: The Bum La Pass is quite famous among tourists visiting Arunachal Pradesh. It is almost 37km away from Tawang. You need the Protected Area Permit to enter the Bum La Pass as Indian Army guards the area.
  • Sangetser Lake: The Sangetsar Lake was formed due to an earthquake in 1971. It is also known as Madhuri Lake as it was used during the shooting of the movie Koila. The Indian Army runs a few small canteens.
